The Right Questions

A gentleman I shared the gospel with told me shortly after he had received Jesus that I had answered all of his questions. But he hadn*t asked me any questions. Only God knows the questions we ought to be asking and the answers to them. Through the gospel He answers questions that men don*t even know they should be asking. The right questions and the right answers about salvation and living the Christian life are parts of the gift.

2 Peter 1:3: According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Without God*s help men do not even know the right questions, much less the right answers to be saved or to find His will. If we ask wrong questions we will get wrong answers. Jesus answered and said. That phrase appears many times in the Bible. Most of those times, the Bible does not record that anyone asked a question. Some individuals in the Bible got close to the right questions, but still missed the mark.

Mark 10:17: And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

Luke 10:25: And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Luke 18:18: And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

Acts 16:30-31: And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

There are problems with the phrases What shall I do? and What must I do? Salvation does not happen as a result of what we do. It happens as a result of what we believe.

Ephesians 2:8-10: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

And salvation happens because of what God does.

John 6:44: No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
